Picturesque European Towns & Villages

Going back to my bookmarks (without putting a silly abbreviation) there are still definitely some that are useful to look at. 33 Picturesque European Towns & Villages I found fairly early into 2013 when I was starting to get the itch for looking at odd and interesting places around the world. Now I see how some of these can be used to help create a town/level for a game.

Reine in Norway, the first on the list, I think is the best example of how people have adapted to the land mass they settled in. That in terms of designing overall maybe you should design the geography / land of the area you are creating then make the town itself adapt to the land you created so that it feels like the town fits in rather than the land fits the town.

In contrast to that is Naarden, Netherland, the 9th on the list. An example of a type of fort called a star fort. The town very much looks like it was hand made to suit the needs at the time. The land looks fake, and I think a design like this in a game would more fit a posh area of a town or a very wealthy town, maybe like Beverley Hills or Victoria Dock in Hull.

The 11th on the list, Cochem, Germany, is a good example of the simple idea of a town where the main town is low and fairly flat, and on top looking over the area is a castle of mansion. This would especially fit in a fantasy RPG like Skyrim. It would make sense in the lore that the lord of the town or the star of the town would want to be on top looking down.

Mürren, Switzerland has the wow factor of being high above sea level and having outstanding scenery to look out on. You can’t get to it by public road the article says, so a town in a game based on here could be a town that is designed to look at the scenery, or a small village of outcasts perhaps.

Manarola, Italy is on the coast, but would make a good level due to the varying levels of houses built on the steep cliff. Something similar (albeit with more space) could work good in an Assassin’s Creed game where there is a focus on the free roaming around and on top of buildings.
